Pilates is a body conditioning routine that may help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. Pilates emphasizes correct spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core, and improving coordination, flexibility and balance. Pilates' system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.
Pilates is performed either on the mat using the bodies natural resistance or on Pilates equipment. The reformer, Cadillac, stability chair and ladder barrel are some examples of equipment that Pilates uses to strengthen individuals.
Pilates also strengthens and balances muscles, supports correct posture, and allows for ease of movement. It is useful for improving balance, lumbar stabilization and flexibility, lower back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction.
Both floor- and machine-based GYROTONIC ® workouts emphasize rhythmic, flowing sequences of movements paired with specific breathing patterns that help stimulate cardiovascular and neurological systems. And both emphasize core work — toning the muscles around the torso and improving posture, balance and agility.
